Methylsulfonylmethaan of MSM
is een zwavelvorm die commercieel kan worden gesynthetiseerd uit dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)(1). MSM is ook aanwezig in het menselijk lichaam waar het wordt gemetaboliseerd uit ingenomen DMSO. Men vindt het in hersenvocht en in het plasma in concentraties van 0-25mmol/ l. MSM heeft chemopreventieve eigenschappen(2), vertoont anti- inflammatoire activiteit(3), anti-atherosclerotische werking, remming van de prostacycline (PGI2) synthese en neutralisering van vrije radicalen(4). Deze stof is onder meer doeltreffend bij artrose.
Een studie van Usha en Naidu leert dat patiënten met knie-artrose een 33% pijnreductie op de visuele-analoge schaal (VAS) voor pijn vertonen (p <0,001) na behandeling met MSM(5).
Een studie van Kim et al. wijst op bijwerkingen zoals GI-problemen, hoofdpijn, slapeloosheid, vermoeidheid en/ of concentratie problemen in 57% van de behandelde patiënten(6). Andere literatuur over MSM meldt onbewezen bijwerkingen van verhoogde bloeddruk, verhoogde effectiviteit van anticoagulantia en verhoogde leverfunctietests(7). Verdere studies kunnen, zoals soms wordt gesuggereerd(8), de dosering van MSM mogelijks verder verfijnen.
